Both played for High School State Championship teams, and Nick starred for the 1942 Providence College nine that won the Eastern Collegiate Summer Championship. But Slick one-upped his older brother, playing for the 1952 Holy Cross team that captured the NCAA National title.

1954 Frank Lanning honored Pat Abbruzzi's selection as Rhode Island Athlete of the Year. The next year, while playing for the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes, he was named both the Schenley Player of the Year and the Canadian Football League's Back of the Year.
