Warren High School Boys Soccer 1985 (Team Induction, Class of 2024)

A late-season loss to Narragansett forced the Redskins to share the Division Two South title with the Mariners.  However, in the Division Two playoffs, after first defeating Scituate and Mt. St. Charles, the team shut out the Mariners 3-0, and in the process, captured the Division Two title.

Doug Mitchell was voted the playoffs’ Most Valuable Player.  Other team members were Dave Annunziata, Mike Avila, Mark Avila, Chad Brinkman, Mark Brochu, Randy Brule, Josh Cappuccilli, Paul Carey, John Chaves, Gil Costa, Don Cowart, Don Fitting, David Rodriques, David Stoffregen, Neil Swift, and Fred Zompa.

After the team, coached by Manuel deMelo, had nobody named to the All-State squad, the Narragansett coach wrote a letter to the Providence Journal sports editor in which he argued that both Doug Mitchell and Neil Swift should have been included on the team.  He added that their omission was an insult to all the Division Two players and coaches.

Gil Costa, Doug Mitchell, and Neil Swift are members of the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame.
