SHIRLEY A. ROSE (Athlete  Class of 2004)

The state’s Girls Track Co-Outstanding Junior High School Girl in 1973, Shirley Rose then moved on to Warren High School.

While at Warren High she set the state record in the 220 yard dash in 1974 and also ran a leg for the state-winning 440-yard relay team.  In 1975 she both broke her own 220 yard mark and tied fellow Hall of Fame member Laurie Figureid’s state mark in the 50 yard hurdles.  And then in her senior season of 1976 she tied her own state mark in the hurdles.

Shirley was named All State in all three of those seasons (1974 to 1976) and also earned Divisional honors in those three years, specifically in the 50 yard dash, the 220-yard dash, the hurdles, the long jump, and the 440 yard relay.

She was a member of the Warren High School Girls Track State Championship squads in both 1974, when North Kingstown finished as the runner-up to the Redskins for the second year in a row, and 1975, when Barrington was easily defeated.  In 1976 the girls were not able to “pull off a four-peat” (they had also won in 1973), but they did capture a seven-team, small-school title by ½ point over East Greenwich.
