Inductee George Goulet (Old-Timer, Posthumous )
Athletic Portfolio:
From 1945 to 1947, the “Boys of Warren” took control of the Rhode Island High School Athletics scene. The Warren High School Baseball team captured the State Championship in 1945 and 1946. In 1947 La Salle Academy’s baseball nine, led by two Warren All Staters, prevented Warren High from achieving a three-peat. And in 1945 and 1946 All State defenseman George Goulet led Mt. St. Charles Academy’s hockey team to back-to-back titles.
The Mount’s leaders took early notice of George’s accomplishments in both academics and athletics. And even though he eventually starred in hockey, football, and baseball, they still mentioned that he was an above average basketball player.
It now seems impossible, but in his sophomore year, the Mt. St. Charles hockey team did not make the playoffs. Thanks to George, that situation would soon change.
In 1945 he earned the Golden Letter, emblem of highest scholastic achievement, and was named a Class officer, while still finding time to be one of a trio of defensemen who backboned the school’s undefeated State Championship season.
And then in his senior year George did just about everything:
.He co-captained the football team and even though they posted a losing record, he
received consideration for All State honors;
.In baseball he served as both captain and the team’s top pitcher;
.As the hockey six repeated as State Titleists, he was named an All State defenseman;
.And he was one of eight seniors who achieved membership in the Rhode Island
Honor Society.
After service in the United States Army, he enrolled at Dartmouth College, but sickness (and untimely death) prevented him from ever suiting up for the Big Green hockey team.
