KRIS COLLINS (Athlete, Class of 2005)
Kris Collins burst onto the local athletic scene as a member of the Little League Baseball Red Sox, who were league champions in 1988. Subsequently he was named to the Senior Baseball League All Stars two years in a row.
At Warren High School he starred in baseball, football, and wrestling, helping lead the Redskins to the Class D Football Super Bowl finals. Kris was named All State in both football and wrestling and earned first team all class/division honors on eight separate occasions.
His wrestling achievements began in his sophomore year, when, competing at 140 pounds, he won the Rhode Island Takedown title, was named Class C’s Outstanding Wrestler, and finished sixth in the State Championships. He came back in 1992 and, having moved up to 171 pounds, placed second in the State Championships, earning All State honors in the process. In his senior year, Kris wrestled at 189 pounds and placed third at both the Class B and State Championships.
Coach John Rogers had this to say about his grappling style: “He doesn’t lose sight of what he wants. He doesn’t lose track of things. Once he’s focused, nothing stops him.”
He was named a first team Class D football defensive back in his junior season. In the following year he helped lead his squad to the Class D football Super Bowl finals and was named an All State running back and an all class linebacker.
Following his graduation from Warren High, Kris’ accomplishments included: (1) a member of Salve Regina’s 8-1 football team in 1994; (2) a star for Malik’s Liquors, which won the Rick Jackson three-on-three basketball tournament in 1997; and (3) a coach for the Warren Wrestling Club in the late 1990s.
