NANCY J. CHAFFEE (Athlete, Class of 2011)
Nancy Chaffee is the only woman to win the Rhode Island Women’s Golf Association’s (RIWGA) Junior, Regular, and Senior Championships. Having garnered the Association’s Girls title in 1961, she won the Rhode Island State Championship in four different decades before wearing the crown of State Senior Champion four times in the early part of this century.
Nancy has been the Rhode Island Country Club’s (RICC) Women’s Champion fifteen (15) times and is the only female to have made a hole-in-one at all of the par-three holes at that Barrington club. She has also captured RICC’s Senior Women’s Championship.
At Newport Country Club, one of the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) five founding members, she has held the women’s title eight (8) times, while in New England competition she won the New England Legends Championship in both 2009 and 2010. Nationally she has competed twenty-four times in such USGA events as the United States Women’s Amateur, the United States Senior Women’s Amateur, and the Women’s North-South Championship.
Overseas Nancy finished third in the Irish Senior Ladies Championship of 2002 and twelfth in the British Senior Ladies Championship of that same year.
Off the course Nancy has been just as active in golf matters. She has taught the RIWGA’s junior girls golf program for more than twenty years, served on the USGA’s Regional Affairs Committee, been the USGA’s representative on the RIWGA board, and sat as a board member of the inner-city Button Hole Golf complex. She is a proud participant in the RIWGA’s girls scholarship program.
Nancy was inducted into the Rhode Island Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.
