WARREN HIGH SCHOOL SUBURBAN EAST WRESTLING CHAMPIONS 1970 (Current Era Team) (Class of 2013)
Wins over Bristol and Barrington (twice) highlighted an undefeated Suburban East championship season for the Warren High School wrestling team of 1970. The team, coached by Mike Nicolazzo and Dick Chester, also outscored Chariho, Cumberland, East Greenwich, Johnston, and Our Lady of Providence.
Starters John Abenante, Gordon Kee, Mike Marino, and Bob Pray won or tied all of their dual meet matches during the season. In the state championship meet, four of the team’s grapplers finished in the top six, with Marino and Kee earning fourth place honors and Dan Devine and Bob Rutkiewicz placing sixth.
During the regular season the grapplers outpointed their opponents five hundred and three to one hundred and thirty-six.
Having lost in overtime in the state semi-finals, Mike Marino then placed fourth at the New England championships. (He is being inducted into the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame as an individual member this year.)
Team members who won one or more matches during the season were Abenante, Paul Almeida, Charlie Burke, Devine, Peter Funk, Kee, Jerry Lawrence, Romeo Lombardi, Marino, Ed McDonald, Pray, Rutkiewicz, Fred Siembab, and Dicky Smith.
Other team members were Alan Carvalho, Steve D’Albergaria, Bruce Dyer, Kevin Gruca, Raymond Johnson, Steve Leites, Charlie McPhillips, Phil Ouellette, and Gary Palumbo.
