THOMAS MELLOR  (Athlete, Class of 2016)

Tom Mellor grew up on the basketball courts of Warren. At the time Tom entered Warren High School, a local college basketball team was bringing basketball to the forefront in RI. Providence College burst on the scene, winning the NIT Tournament at Madison Square Garden in 1961. Basketball courts in Warren were flooded with kids looking to emulate the PC five. Liberty St., St. Mary’s, Child St., and the hotbed of Warren sandlot basketball-Baker St., became the classroom for sandlot basketball in town. Tom cut his basketball teeth at Liberty St. and Baker St. The ground work was laid here for a lifetime of involvement in the sport of Hoops. Tom lettered in baseball, football, and basketball at WHS.  As Tom moved through Warren High School it became evident that his future in sports was on the basketball court.

In 1963 he was a key member of the St. Pius team that won the New England CYO Tournament. Tom was named the outstanding player of the tournament.

After high school he attended Johnson & Wales where he co-captained a team that was ranked in the New England Junior College top 10. Johnson & Wales later became Johnson & Wales University.  Tom Mellor was elected to the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tom moved to Maine after college and used his experience as a player to enter into coaching and later officiating. He was one of Maine’s top high school sports officials in several sports including basketball, baseball, and soccer.

Tom was a certified member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials in Maine for 30 years. He was a founder of the Pee Wee Basketball League and the Mid Coast Maine Athletic Hall of Fame.  Pete Webb, Maine State Basketball Commissioner had this to say about Tom-“He was one of the top 25 basketball officials in Maine for 20 years.”
